What is OtaSizzle?

OtaSizzle studies mobile social interaction services in campus life. It develops novel services and introduces them to a community of up to thousands of users covering students, employees, and partners of the Aalto University.

The OtaSizzle platform provides both a flexible programming environment for creating new social interaction services and an infrastructure for deploying and testing them in real-life settings (a "mobile living lab") on the campuses of the Aalto University. To date, two services have been published:

Ossi is a group-centered mobile social media service aimed at modern mobile phones. A user can use Ossi to connect with friends, keep in touch with groups and to stay tuned to what is sizzling around her.

Kassi is a WWW-based service that enables the exchange of various favors through listings posted by users. There are five categories: Marketplace, Favors, Group search, Carpools, Lost&found and Other. The user can browse the listings without registering to the service, but if she wants to answer to a listing or see the user profiles she has to create an user account.

In addition, the experimental NordSecMob service has been relesased for more restricted audience. NSM is a practical information sharing social networking service for NordSecMob and International students. The main objective is to promote sharing of experience, ideas, thoughts and social life during one's study period among NordSecMob student community.

OtaSizzle is coordinated by Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). Other partcipants are Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Communications and Networking at TKK.

OtaSizzle is funded by donations from private companies and communities to the "Technology for Life" campaign of the Aalto University under the MIDE research programme. It has also received direct sponsoring from Nokia (N97 phones under the Nokia Pilots program) and Elisa (3G data plans for participating Aalto students).

The project leader is Professor Martti Mäntylä and the project manager Dr. Olli Pitkänen from HIIT.
